These are the Trending Travel Destinations in the U.S. and Beyond

May 23, 2017

Out with the big cities. Out with European castles, the Caribbean cruises, and the Florida beaches. Americans’ travel habits, they are a-changing. A recent analysis by tracked the top emerging travel destinations among U.S. travelers and found that Americans are veering away from the big cities and familiar jaunts, and they’re venturing toward nature in National Parks and America’s largely uncovered Latin side.

  1. Glendale, Arizona
  2. Indio, California
  3. Williams, Arizona
  4. Boise, Idaho
  5. Kingman, Arizona
  6. Plymouth, Massachusetts
  7. Laredo, Texas
  8. Yuma, Arizona
  9. Winter Haven, Florida
  10. Baytown, Texas

See those cute, little trees? That’s our designer saying, “Hey, look! Parks!” Indeed, the most common thread among our emerging destinations in the U.S. is that trivago users are looking reconnect with nature. Indio, for instance, finds itself in the heart of Joshua Tree country. If you still haven’t found what you’re looking for (obligatory U2 reference) there, the Coachella Capital is also nearby Mount San Jacinto, along with Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Palomar Mountain, and Cleveland National Forest.

Then there’s Williams, Arizona, an unassuming town along Route-66 that’s known as “The Gateway to the Grand Canyon.” Boise, too, has its namesake National Forest on the edges of town, and travelers to Winter Haven, Florida can enjoy a chain of 50 lakes rather than the ocean in the Sunshine State.

Ultimately, this is no surprise. National Parks have been seeing record attendance numbers which, based on this data, will only increase in the coming years.

  1. Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
  2. Medellín, Colombia
  3. Mazatlán, Mexico
  4. Cartagena, Colombia
  5. Puerto Peñasco, Mexico
  6. Panama City, Panama
  7. Mexico City, Mexico
  8. Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico
  9. Johor Bahru
  10. Acapulco, Mexico

Though our data indicates that Americans predominantly travel domestically, looking outside of our borders suggests that Americans aren’t flocking to European castles like they did in the past. No, they’re heading South–wayyy South–for their international getaways. Latin America overwhelmingly takes the cake–it practically ate the whole thing!–for emerging international destinations among U.S. travelers. With Latin America taking the cake, Malaysia seems to be slurping the ice cream in this gluttonous metaphor.

Mexican destinations should come as no surprise with our respective countries increasingly mingling over the decade. But it’s not the resort towns of Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, and Puerto Vallarta topping the list; instead, we’re seeing newcomers like historical Mazatlán and Puerto Peñasco, the town on the other side of the Baja.

Colombia, too, should be an expected topper. Medellín’s turnaround from the days of Escobar is nothing more than astonishing, and travelers have taken note. Tourism in both Medellin and the Caribbean Cartagena have been surging, with officials hoping to reach over one million American tourists over the next years.

What’s with these surges in tourism?

For starters, a number of factors might play into the increased interest in these destinations–new airline routes and affordability, primarily. We can’t say for certain. But what we do know is that our travel itch seems to be inflamed for these cities and what they offer.
