January 6, 2017

No matter your political leanings, you may need to take out a lien on your mortgage in order to attend the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump in Washington D.C.

According to data, hotel rates for the historic event have reached astronomical heights – with a room in the nation’s capital now costing an average $2,071/night on January 20th – a 927% increase when compared to the week before inauguration.

Week Before Inauguration Nightly Rate Inauguration Nightly Rate % Increase
Thursday, January 12 $237 Thursday, January 19 $1,308 452%
Friday, January 13 $202 Friday, January 20 $2,071 927%

* Rates based on hotel searches conducted on between Nov 9, 2016 & Jan 5, 2017 for a standard double room.

Historically, hotel rates in Washington D.C. are at their lowest of the year in winter. The trivago Hotel Price Index recorded an average nightly rate of $204 in January 2016, second only to December 2016 when rates dropped to $197/night.

NOTE: Unfortunately, as trivago had not yet entered the U.S. market when President Barack Obama was first inaugurated in January 2009, we are unable to provide hotel rates for the event.
